Long-haul flights can be pretty tedious. Keep yourself entertained with these six suggestions.
1. Learn a new skill
A lengthy flight is the perfect opportunity to focus on things you’ve been wanting to learn. From video editing to ornithology, brush up on your chosen skill on the plane – you can accomplish a lot in transit.
2. Get creative
Whether it’s colouring, calligraphy, scrapbooking or something else, exercising your creative flare is a fun way to pass the time. It’s also a great way to relax if you’re a particularly nervous flyer.
3. Learn the local language
It’s always useful to know the basics of the local language. At the very least, I like to know how to say ‘hello’, ‘thank you’, ‘goodbye’ and sometimes even how to ask for directions in the language of the country I’m visiting.
4. Read a book
When in doubt, read a book. Getting stuck in a really good book can make a 10-hour flight feel like a 10-minute flight. I always like to carry a hard copy book with me when I travel, but if you can’t afford to sacrifice any space in your suitcase, download an e-book instead.
5. Listen to a podcast
If reading in transit makes you feel sick, try listening to a podcast instead – there’s plenty to choose from. Just remember to download each podcast for offline access.
6. Plan your trip
Finally, if you’re a last minute planner, buy a travel guide before boarding your flight and plan your trip in transit. Make a list of things you really want to visit so you can start exploring as soon as you arrive.
