Flying can really suck the life out of your skin. The combination of low humidity, stress of travel and other, slightly more scientific things encourages dry skin and breakouts – not something you want to be dealing with on your first day of holiday.
Ensuring your skin is properly hydrated before, during and after a flight, however, will lower the risk of a blemish appearing as you hit arrivals. How? Here’s a couple of tips.
1. Pre-flight prep
Gently exfoliate your skin and apply a moisturising mask the night before your flight. This will maximise your skin’s moisture levels.
2. Take it off
You need to let your skin breath while flying so avoid wearing a lot of make-up, if any at all. Many experts recommend wearing a nourishing moisturiser and perhaps a BB or CC cream only.
3. Drink, please
It’s important to stay hydrated while you’re flying. Try to avoid alcohol and caffeine as these can dry out your system. Instead, keep a small bottle of water with you to sip frequently.
4. Spritz with caution
Spritzing your face with regular water might feel like a nice thing to do during a long flight, but it actually makes your skin drier as soon as it evaporates. Use a nourishing spray instead.
5. Close the vents
Unless you’re really warm, turn off the air con. It can really dry out your skin otherwise – even making it itch and flake.
6. Wash your hands
Wash your hands before you apply moisturiser, either in the airplane restroom or with an antibacterial wipe.
7. Blot, blot, blot!
Oil production increases if skin becomes dry. So if you already suffer with oily skin, remember to blot your skin with tissue or oil-blotting papers during your flight to reduce oil and acne-causing bacteria.
